Before you access the I.S.T.B. Service have you?


  • Checked the student's record card for valuable information.
  • Informally discussed the behavioural problem with your colleagues.
  • Discussed the problem with the School Counsellor.
  • Consulted with the student's parents / caregivers.
  • Spoken to the previous years teacher for information and ideas.
  • Followed through with suggestions given by the above people.
  • Undertaken some specific observations of the student i.e. by yourself while another teacher is teaching the child/class or by a colleague during one of your lessons.
  • Completed some professional reading on behaviour management e.g. Behaviour Management and/or Behaviour Recovery by Bill Rogers.
  • Observed other teachers' classes for further ideas on student management.
  • Devised, implemented and evaluated some different strategies and given them time to work.
  • Formally sought the advice and support of your immediate supervisor and other executive.
  • Referred the student and the problem to the Learning Support Team and School Counsellor.
  • Thoroughly followed through with the recommendations of the Learning Support Team and School Counsellor.

Which students are eligible?

In general, students who have not responded to the normal range of class and school management strategies. This includes students who exhibit persistent negative behaviour, are likely to be or have been suspended, or students whose behaviour is causing concern to school personnel.

What will an I.S.T.B intervention require of you and your school?

School Commitment
Willingness to:
Release teacher(s) where necessary
Provide support to teacher and student as required
Involve other School District Personnel where necessary - eg Counsellor, Executive, Teachers

Teacher Commitment
Willingness to:
Attend meetings as necessary
Have the I.S.T.B observe the student in the classroom
Help prepare resources
Trial suggestions made
Be patient and persistent
