What
is a School Based Part-time Traineeship?
A
school based part-time trainee is a student enrolled in the Higher
School Certificate (HSC) who also undertakes a traineeship. The
formal training component of the traineeship provides HSC unit credit.
Traineeships are work based training programs
that combine work and structured training. Although they vary from
one industry to another, all traineeships include the following:
-
Paid
Employment
- A
training agreement or binding that is signed by both the employer
and trainee and registered with the NSW Department of Education
and Training
- A
training program, delivered by a registered training organisation
that meets the requirements of a declared traineeship in NSW and
leads to a nationally recognised qualification
Traineeships
are declared and administered in NSW under the NEW Apprenticeship
and Traineeship Act 2001. This legislation sets out the roles
and responsibilities of the employer and the trainee who are party
to a training agreement (binding).
Trainees
are required to complete between 1500 – 1600 hours of work and training.
The
time students spend in work for a school based part-time traineeship
may vary from one traineeship area to another and from one week
to another. The actual pattern of time spent at work will be negotiated
between the supervisor, the student and the school.
