Disabilities Access Programs

The provision of equitable access is an obligation of the New South Wales Government’s social justice strategy and is in keeping with the NSW Charter for Equity in Education and Training(1997), the Disability Discrimination Act (1992) and the NSW Governments Disability Policy Framework (1999).

 Students with a disability may participate in HSC VET courses when they are undertaking a pattern of study leading to the award of an HSC. This includes students who are undertaking a Stage 6 Special Program of Study.

 With appropriate support, students with disabilities may access all HSC VET courses through standard course arrangements.

Students who are eligible for a Special Program of Study may also participate in these courses through Access Program options.

 Eligibility for SSP HSC

•      has completed at least 4 Generic Life Skills courses in Stage 5; or

•      has attempted regular syllabuses for the SC but has experienced significant difficulty; or

•      transfers from interstate or overseas; or

•      has a deteriorating condition

•      have Individual transition Plan (ITP)

Access Program Option

These options recognise that these students may require additional time to achieve competence, but they are not separate courses. They allow students to undertake fewer units of competency/modules within an approved course and timeframe (as identified in students ITP) than would normally be required. Students may undertake access program option:

•      School Delivered VET - in all 7 Industry Curriculum Frameworks

•      TAFE Delivered VET - in all T VET Courses

Individual Transition Planning

Individual Transition Planning involving student, parent and school personnel identifies the most appropriate vocational pathway and mode of study  for the student taking into account

•   Students strengths interests and abilities

•  Work experience Stage 5

•   Prerequisite skills for particular industry eg Literacy, numeracy, physical capacity

•   Level of classroom and workplace support required

Available Support

•      VET Disability Support Funding to support classroom delivery and work placement

•      Stage 6 Industry Curriculum Frameworks Support Document for Students with Special Education Needs

•      District Vocational Education Consultant

•      Support Teacher Transition

Process for Accessing Funding

School Delivered VET

•      Schools receive applications Term 4 for classroom support (for following year)

•      Schools receive applications in Term 1 for work placement support

•      STT will give schools support in the application process

TAFE Delivered VET

•      Schools receive applications Term 4 for TAFE classroom support (for following year)

•      TAFE receives applications in Term 1 for work placement support

•      STT (Support teacher Transition) will give schools support in the application process

 

Process for Accessing TVET

•      Application in line with mainstream process

    • included on the school summary sheet
    • identify students disability on summary sheet
    • contact needs to be made with STT
    • identified on ESS (if not if in support unit)
